Tonny Mawejje named Muteesa I Royal University head coach for title defence

Tonny Mawejje has been appointed head coach of Muteesa I Royal University after the side won the University Football League title with a 1-0 victory over YMCA in May. The former Uganda Cranes midfielder takes charge as the Royal Lions prepare to defend their crown.

Mawejje and his backroom staff were presented at the university’s premises in Kilumba, Masaka, on Wednesday. He succeeds George William Ssengabi, who guided Muteesa I Royal University to its first University Football League championship last season.

The new coach brings playing experience from his time with Uganda’s national team and has continued building his coaching career since retiring from football in 2022. His previous coaching work includes roles at Wakiso Giants, Kampala Queens and St. Noa Girls.

Mawejje also works as a football pundit on FUFA TV, where he has featured on coverage of Uganda Premier League matches. His appointment adds a coach with experience across both technical and broadcast roles to the university side’s preparations.

He will be supported by Ashadu Bugembe as goalkeeping coach. Bugembe previously played as a goalkeeper for Maroons, SC Villa and Masaka LC, giving the new coaching team a former top-level player in charge of that department.

Muteesa I Royal University’s title came in the final at Hamz Stadium, Nakivubo, where the team edged YMCA by a single goal. Mawejje’s immediate task will be to prepare the champions for the next University Football League campaign while seeking to retain the trophy secured under Ssengabi.
