Truro City edge Southampton 2-1 in National League Cup opener
Southampton Under-21s began their National League Cup campaign with a 2-1 defeat by Truro City after a goalless first half.
Truro City began their National League Cup campaign with a 2-1 win over Southampton Under-21s on Tuesday night. The result gave Saints a losing start to the competition after the teams went into half-time level at 0-0.
Southampton created the first clear opportunity when Princewill Ehibhatiomhan sent a shot over the bar inside the opening 10 minutes. Truro responded through Zac Bell, whose effort required two attempts from Dylan Moody to keep out. Lewis Bailey later found the net for the visitors after running onto a ball over the defence, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
Truro made a change in goal before the interval, with Aidan Stone replaced by Dan Lavercombe after 25 minutes. Lavercombe immediately denied Ehibhatiomhan, preserving the deadlock as Southampton finished the first half with greater attacking momentum.
The hosts moved ahead eight minutes after the restart. Will Dean delivered a free-kick into the area and Max Kinsey arrived at the far post to head Truro in front. Ehibhatiomhan then tested Lavercombe again, before sending two further attempts wide as Saints tried to respond.
Truro doubled their advantage when Jack Stretton turned a cross into the net. Southampton introduced Harry Gathercole at half-time and he reduced the deficit late on, scoring his first goal of the season, but the goal did not bring Adam Lallana’s side level.
The defeat was Southampton’s first of the season and leaves their National League Cup campaign without a point after its opening fixture. Truro reached the competition’s final four last season, and their victory gave them an early result against a Saints side that could not convert its chances before the late consolation.
