Two suspects arrested over murder of former champion Zolani Tete

Two suspects, aged 30 and 22, have been arrested in connection with the murder of former South African world boxing champion Zolani Tete. Tete, 38, was shot dead in Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape on Friday night, while a 27-year-old woman was wounded in the same attack.

The arrests took place on Saturday in KuGompo after a police operation based on intelligence and involving several law enforcement units. The two suspects are being questioned over Tete’s death and the attempted murder of the injured woman.

Police said Tete had arrived at a residence in NU17, Mdantsane, when two armed men got out of a vehicle and opened fire. The attackers were wearing balaclavas, according to the account given by police.

Tete died at the scene. The woman survived the shooting but sustained injuries, and her condition has not been provided.

Investigators are following several leads, with police indicating that more arrests could follow. No motive has been disclosed, and the circumstances surrounding the arrests have also not been made public while the investigation continues.

The South African Police Service has cautioned against speculation and the sharing of unverified information. Police said such activity could affect the investigation and potential court proceedings as the case develops.
