UFC 330: Mackenzie Dern retains strawweight title against Robertson

Mackenzie Dern retained the UFC women’s strawweight title by defeating Gillian Robertson via unanimous decision at UFC 330. The judges scored the five-round contest 49-46, 49-46 and 48-47 in favour of the champion.

The co-main event marked Dern’s first defence of the belt. Robertson, a Canadian challenger seeking her first UFC championship, entered the fight on a five-fight winning run that included victories over Polyana Viana, Michelle Waterson-Gomez, Luana Pinheiro, Marina Rodriguez and Amanda Lemos.

Dern established the grappling pattern early. After Robertson failed to complete an initial takedown attempt, Dern connected with a double-leg in the opening round and moved into half-guard. She attacked a kimura, used ground strikes to create openings and eventually took Robertson’s back, threatening a rear-naked choke before the round ended.

The champion repeated that success at the start of the second round, taking Robertson down and again working towards the back. Robertson escaped the choke by moving into top position, but Dern regained control during the ensuing exchanges and continued attacking the leg. The Canadian landed hammer fists from advantageous positions, although Dern remained the more effective fighter in the scrambles.

Robertson had a stronger third round, landing a clean left hand and applying more pressure with her jab and kicks. Dern’s combinations were sharper early in the contest, but her output dipped as the round progressed. A takedown with about a minute remaining helped the champion regain control and likely secured another round on the scorecards.

Dern returned to her wrestling in the fourth, taking Robertson down and moving from half-guard to the back. She secured a body triangle and spent much of the round looking for another choke. Robertson survived, reversed position late and landed ground strikes, but Dern answered by attacking an arm and preserved her advantage.

Robertson finally completed a single-leg takedown in the fifth round and finished strongly from inside Dern’s guard. The challenger increased the force of her hammer fists as time ran down, but she needed a finish and could not find one. Dern’s repeated takedowns, positional control and submission threats had already built the lead that carried her to a unanimous decision.
