Umar Ali says Kotoko move fulfils dream shared by Ghana’s youth

Asante Kotoko’s new left-back Umar Ali says joining the club fulfils a dream held by many young Ghanaian footballers. The 22-year-old has completed a move to the Porcupine Warriors on a two-year contract ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Ali said the opportunity carried special meaning because Kotoko has long been a destination for youngsters who want to build careers in Ghanaian football. He also described himself as fortunate to have reached the club after beginning his professional journey outside the Ghana Premier League.

The defender arrives from UAE Pro League side Banyias, where he played 21 league matches during the 2024/25 season. He contributed four assists in that campaign, adding an attacking dimension to his work from the left side.

Ali is primarily a left-back but can also operate as a left centre-back. That versatility will give head coach Eric Tinkler another option as Kotoko assemble their squad for the new season.

The move will represent a new experience for Ali, who has not previously played in the Ghana Premier League. He has been introduced to the demands of the competition by teammates and other players around the club, and is now awaiting the start of the campaign.

His immediate challenge will be to establish himself in Kotoko’s defence. The two-year agreement gives him the opportunity to compete for a regular role while adapting to domestic football and meeting the expectations that come with playing for one of Ghana’s most prominent clubs.
