Wallabies restore Ikitau and Suaalii for two Argentina Tests

Len Ikitau and Joseph Suaalii return as Australia name a 31-man squad for Tests against Argentina on 29 August and 5 September.

Australia have recalled Len Ikitau and Joseph Suaalii for a two-Test tour of Argentina, with matches scheduled for 29 August and 5 September. The returns give new Wallabies coach Les Kiss back two important centre options after their recent injury absences.

Ikitau was unavailable for both Tests against Japan because of an ankle problem. Suaalii missed the second game of that series with a hamstring injury, but both players have now been included in a 31-man touring squad.

Kiss has largely kept faith with the group that opened his tenure with two victories. Australia edged Japan 35-32 in Osaka before recording a 56-17 win in Townsville, and the coach has chosen continuity as the team prepares for a more demanding assignment in Argentina.

The squad contains 15 backs and 16 forwards. Alongside Ikitau and Suaalii, the backline includes Filipo Dauganu, Ben Donaldson, Carter Gordon, Isaac Henry, Max Jorgensen, Ryan Lonergan, Tate McDermott, Declan Meredith, Hunter Paisami, Dylan Pietsch, Harry Potter, Kalani Thomas and Tom Wright.

Wright is the only specialist fullback selected and could reach 50 Test appearances during the tour. Jock Campbell, the Reds fullback regarded as one of Australia’s leading outside backs, has not been picked.

The forwards include Allan Alaalatoa, Angus Bell, Charlie Cale, Josh Canham, Massimo de Lutiis, Tom Hooper, Isaac Kailea, Fraser McReight, Josh Nasser, Brandon Paenga-Amosa, Billy Pollard, Aidan Ross, Lukhan Salakaia-Loto, Lachlan Shaw, Carlo Tizzano, Taniela Tupou, Rob Valetini, Jeremy Williams and Harry Wilson. Miles Amatosero was not available because he is suspended.

The Argentina fixtures will test whether Australia can build on its strong start under Kiss. The coach has said the team must improve further as a new group, with the tour expected to demand a higher level from a squad still developing its style and cohesion.
