Watoto Golf Tournament raises funds for vulnerable mothers

The third edition of the Watoto Golf Tournament concluded on Saturday, August 8, at the Uganda Golf Club in Kitante, Kampala. Held under the theme “Hope on the Green,” the event brought together professional golfers, amateurs, caddies, and corporate teams to raise funds for vulnerable mothers.

Watoto Church Ministries has set a target to raise Shs450 million this year. These funds are intended to provide business starter packs worth Shs450,000 to 1,000 vulnerable mothers to help them establish or grow small businesses. This initiative follows a previous year where Shs360 million was raised to support 1,000 women, resulting in more than 700 mothers receiving training and business support.

Senior Pastor and Team Leader of Watoto Church Ministries, Julius Rwotlonyo, stated that the tournament aims to bring hope to vulnerable mothers through practical action rather than handouts. The organization provides mentorship, training, and business support to help women achieve independence. Since 2008, the Watoto Neighborhood Programme has assisted over 8,700 women, with a long-term goal to empower 10,000 mothers by 2034.

On the course, Ronald Rugumayo won the overall Professional category with a gross score of 278. In the Gross Elite Amateur category, Juma Abiti recorded a score of 218 over 54 holes to secure victory. Among the caddies, Denis Kabarira earned the Best Caddie (Men) title with 75 points, while Joweria Namanda was named Best Caddie (Female) with 84 points.

Uganda Golf Club Chairman Michael Nuwagaba noted that the club provides a platform for Watoto to connect with corporate partners and golfers. The tournament was supported by various partners, including the Uganda Professional Golfers Association, the Deo Akope Foundation, and several financial and hospitality institutions.
