WBC Clean Boxing Program warns of energy drink risks

The WBC Clean Boxing Program has issued guidelines regarding the dangers of excessive energy drink consumption for professional boxers.

The WBC Clean Boxing Program has released new guidance addressing the rising consumption of energy drinks among professional boxers. While these products are marketed to increase energy and performance, the program warns that excessive use poses significant health risks to athletes.

High concentrations of caffeine, sugar, and stimulants in these beverages can lead to serious physiological issues. The program notes that these substances can cause heart palpitations, arrhythmias, and spikes in blood pressure, which are particularly dangerous during intense training or combat. Furthermore, the diuretic effect of these drinks can lead to severe dehydration, a critical concern for fighters managing their weight.

Other neurological and physical risks include chronic fatigue and insomnia caused by disrupted sleep cycles. This can hinder muscle recovery and overall performance. The program also highlights that high stimulant doses can trigger anxiety, tremors, and nervousness, which may compromise a boxer's concentration and motor precision inside the ring. Additionally, these drinks may cause adverse reactions when mixed with other supplements or medications.

To mitigate these risks, the WBC Clean Boxing Program advises athletes to prioritize natural hydration through water or electrolyte-rich isotonic drinks. Fighters are encouraged to reduce or eliminate energy drink intake entirely. The program also requires transparency, asking boxers to notify the CBP regarding any supplements or beverages used during their preparation.

Athletes are urged to seek professional medical or nutritional advice before using stimulants. The WBC emphasizes that a balanced diet and proper sleep habits should serve as the foundation for high performance. Through these measures, the organization aims to maintain athlete safety and promote a clean and fair sporting environment.
