AB de Villiers backs Icons Cup concept ahead of South Africa debut

AB de Villiers says the inaugural Icons Cup will connect fans with sporting heroes when South Africa meet Team World in George.

AB de Villiers has praised the Icons Cup ahead of its inaugural South African edition, saying the event will give supporters closer access to stars from several sporting disciplines. The tournament will take place at The Links at Fancourt in George from 11 to 13 December.

The three-day match-play golf event will feature Team South Africa against Team World. Ernie Els will captain the hosts, while José María Olazábal will lead the international side. De Villiers believes the format can show audiences a more personal side of athletes who are usually seen only through competition and television coverage.

He also sees the tournament as an opportunity to encourage young fans. Meeting sporting figures in person, rather than watching them from a distance, could help children connect with their achievements and find inspiration in their careers.

De Villiers is part of the South African line-up alongside Els, former Springboks Fourie de Preez and Butch James, and former Proteas players Shaun Pollock and Vernon Philander. He expects the home team to compete seriously once play begins, although the players will first have to establish combinations in a field drawn from different sports.

Team World includes former tennis world number one Ashleigh Barty, cricket greats Brian Lara and Yuvraj Singh, ex-Chelsea captain John Terry and former Manchester United star Dwight Yorke. Their presence adds sporting names from tennis, cricket and football to a contest built around golf.

A $10 million hole-in-one prize will be divided between the players, charity and fans. De Villiers believes that element, together with the event's wider concept, gives the Icons Cup the potential to make a meaningful difference beyond the competition itself.
