Abdul Mumin traces Girona move back to street football in Kumasi
Ghana defender Abdul Mumin says street football in Sawaba, Kumasi, shaped the passion that carried him to a three-season Girona contract.
Abdul Mumin, 28, says the street football he played in Sawaba, Kumasi, helped shape the career that has taken him to Girona. The Ghana defender joined the Spanish club on a free transfer and signed a three-season contract after establishing himself with Rayo Vallecano.
Mumin grew up in Sawaba, an area of Kumasi where football was central to daily life. He and his friends would go to the park after school, often playing in the clothes they had worn to class rather than stopping to change.
Those games provided an early foundation for the centre-back, who still remembers that period clearly. He has described football as the main interest shared by him, his friends and the people around them while he was growing up.
His development later took him to the Right to Dream Academy, before he began his professional career in Europe with Nordsjaelland. He subsequently played for Vitoria Guimaraes and Rayo Vallecano before earning the opportunity to continue in Spain with Girona.
Mumin’s route also reflects a steady progression through European football. He moved from HB Koge to Nordsjaelland, then joined Vitoria Guimaraes before his transfer to Rayo Vallecano. His latest move follows his emergence as an established defender in Spanish football.
The Ghana international, who was included in Ghana’s 2026 World Cup squad, says the sport remains central to his life. He hopes to continue playing for several more years and to keep pursuing the part of football that has been important to him since his childhood in Kumasi.
