Okocha picks Messi over Ronaldo in football’s long-running GOAT debate

Okocha has chosen Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo, pointing to the Argentine’s natural connection with football as the decisive difference.

Jay-Jay Okocha has selected Lionel Messi ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo in one of football’s longest-running individual debates. The former Bolton Wanderers player made his position clear while discussing the two icons on the ObiOne podcast.

Okocha recognised Ronaldo’s outstanding ability, especially his record as a prolific scorer. However, he placed Messi on a higher level, arguing that the Argentine’s influence goes beyond finishing chances and reflects a deeper relationship with the sport.

The decision adds Okocha’s voice to a debate that has shaped football for more than a decade. Messi and Ronaldo have collected 13 Ballon d’Or awards between them, underlining the scale of their rivalry and their dominance over the era.

Messi’s latest case was strengthened by his 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign. He scored eight goals and created four more for Argentina as they reached the final, although their run ended with a 1-0 defeat by Spain.

Okocha’s view is based less on totals than on the way Messi plays. He presented Messi as someone whose football appears instinctive and inseparable from his identity, while describing Ronaldo primarily through his exceptional goalscoring output.

The former Bolton player therefore gave Messi the edge in the GOAT discussion, despite acknowledging Ronaldo as a special talent. His conclusion rests on the Argentine’s natural connection to the game rather than on a single title, award or scoring statistic.
