NPFL: Matthew Arinze leaves Kwara United for Libya’s Alafreky SC

Defender Matthew Arinze has joined Libyan club Alafreky SC from Kwara United after 29 appearances and four seasons in the NPFL.

Matthew Arinze has left Kwara United to join Libyan club Alafreky SC, ending his four-season spell in the Nigeria Professional Football League. The move is the defender’s first transfer outside Nigeria.

Arinze played 29 matches for Kwara United last season and helped the club retain its place in the NPFL. His previous Nigerian clubs include Bendel Insurance, Lobi Stars and Abia Warriors.

Kwara United have moved to cover his departure by signing Onyeure Uche Daniel. The new arrival has been brought in as Arinze’s direct replacement as the club prepares for its next league fixture against Kano Pillars on August 30, 2026.

Kwara United occupy 10th place in the 2026 NPFL standings with 50 points from 38 matches. Their record consists of 13 wins, 11 draws and 14 defeats, with 35 goals scored and 35 conceded.

The club’s recent form has included two wins, two draws and one defeat. They beat Enyimba 2-0 and Barau FC 2-1, drew 2-2 away to Niger Tornadoes and 0-0 at Shooting Stars, while their latest listed result was a 4-0 loss away to Bayelsa United.

Arinze now begins a new stage of his career with Alafreky SC, while Kwara United continue preparations with Daniel added to their squad. His departure removes a player who made 29 appearances during the previous campaign and contributed to the club’s successful effort to remain in Nigeria’s top flight.
