Accra’s Borteyman horse racing course destroyed amid site dispute

The destruction of Accra’s only public horse racing course at Borteyman has prompted the Accra Turf Club to seek legal protection.

Accra’s only public horse racing course has been destroyed at Borteyman, creating a serious setback for the sport in Ghana’s capital. The facility was reportedly damaged by unknown individuals while under security protection.

The course stands beside the Borteyman Sports Complex and has been one of Accra’s main venues for horse racing. Its loss leaves the city without its only public facility dedicated to the sport.

The development has raised concern among members of Ghana’s horse racing community. Stakeholders fear the destruction could significantly weaken horse racing in Accra by removing an important location for its activities.

The Accra Turf Club is seeking a court injunction over the site. The club wants the legal order to halt any further activity there while it works to protect the facility.

The club is also seeking to prevent any additional destruction and stop what it describes as a takeover of the property. The move places the future of the Borteyman course at the centre of the dispute.

With the facility located next to the sports complex and serving as a key racing venue, the destruction affects more than one site. It removes a public racing ground from Accra and has intensified concerns about the sport’s position in the capital.
