Akwuegbu urges one football philosophy across Nigeria’s national teams

Former Nigeria striker Benedict Akwuegbu says a shared playing philosophy from youth teams to the senior sides could improve national football.

Former Nigeria international Benedict Akwuegbu has called for a single football philosophy to guide every national team, from the youth sides through to the senior teams. He believes a common identity would help Nigeria confront the repeated problems affecting its national football programme.

Akwuegbu’s proposal is based on continuity. Players would learn the same technical and tactical principles as they progress through the age groups, making the move to senior football more familiar. He also believes coaches could work within a clear framework instead of introducing completely different approaches at each level.

The former striker wants the philosophy to remain in place even when coaches and players change. In his view, Nigeria has used different methods over time without producing lasting success. A long-term model, established across the national teams, would give player development a consistent direction.

His call comes after several setbacks for Nigerian football. The Super Eagles did not qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the Super Falcons failed to reach the 2027 Women’s World Cup for the first time in their history. Nigeria’s Under-20 men also lost 4-1 to Burkina Faso in the WAFU-B final.

Those results have intensified discussion about reforms that go beyond individual coaches or players. Akwuegbu sees a national playing philosophy as one possible response, with technical development beginning at youth level and continuing into the senior teams.

The proposal also comes as the Nigeria Football Federation faces mounting pressure over structural issues affecting the country’s national sides. Akwuegbu’s position is that Nigeria needs a defined identity and greater continuity, rather than repeatedly changing direction without building a lasting system.
