
Andrés Vilaseca retires from Los Teros after 88 caps
Uruguayan rugby icon Andrés Vilaseca has announced his retirement from international duty, moving into a coaching role with the national team.
Andrés Vilaseca has officially retired from international rugby with Los Teros. The former captain concludes his career having earned 88 caps for the Uruguayan national side.
Vilaseca first appeared for the national team in 2013. During his tenure, he became a central figure in the squad, known for his tactical kicking, defensive strength, and running lines as a center-back. His international career included appearances at three Rugby World Cups in 2015, 2019, and 2023, where he served as the team captain.
His club career spanned several different leagues and countries. He played for the Peñarol franchise in Super Rugby Américas, represented Austin Elite in Major League Rugby, and featured for RC Vannes in the French Pro D2.
While his playing days are over, Vilaseca will stay within the Uruguay Rugby structure. He is set to transition into a coaching position. This new role will see him working under the incoming head coach, Guzmán Barreiro.
This coaching appointment is intended to keep Vilaseca's leadership and tactical experience within the national setup to assist the next generation of Los Teros players.
