Andrew Amonde commits to KCB as coach after Shujaa exit

Andrew Amonde has ended his involvement with Kenya’s national sevens team and will now give his full attention to KCB RFC, where he recently became head coach. The former Shujaa strength and conditioning coach said he had been informed that he would no longer remain part of the national setup after his working relationship with the Kenya Rugby Union ended.

Amonde discussed the decision on the sidelines of the Kabeberi Sevens, marking his first public comments since the change. He described the situation as unfortunate but said his priority was to move forward and concentrate on the club responsibility now in front of him.

The former Kenya international’s departure followed his appointment as KCB head coach after he obtained a World Rugby Level II coaching qualification. A KRU letter dated August 9, 2026, referred to a contractual provision preventing a national-team coach from holding a similar coaching role at club level.

Rather than contesting the union’s decision through the courts, Amonde said he would leave the matter behind. He indicated that he did not intend to pursue legal action, whether the termination was ultimately considered legally sound or not, because he believes rugby matters should be resolved through competition rather than litigation.

Amonde spent about 15 years playing for Shujaa before moving into coaching, and he worked with the national sevens side for two years in that capacity. That long association means his exit closes a significant chapter in his involvement with Kenya’s national team.

His immediate task is to establish himself at KCB and develop the squad under his leadership. Amonde acknowledged that the role demands substantial time and commitment, but said the circumstances had left him able to focus fully on improving the club and building a stronger collective. He will now seek to make progress with KCB after stepping away from the national setup.
