Kyabazinga attends 2026 MTN Busoga Masaza Cup opener, Bugweri 1-0
Bugweri opened the 2026 MTN Busoga Masaza Cup with a 1-0 win over Busiki as Kyabazinga Gabula Nadiope IV attended the launch.
Bugweri began the 2026 MTN Busoga Masaza Cup with a 1-0 away victory over Busiki as Kyabazinga William Wilberforce Kadhumbula Gabula Nadiope IV attended the official opening in Namutumba on Saturday, 15 August.
The match was played at the Namutumba District Headquarters playground, where hundreds of people from across Busoga Kingdom and other areas gathered for the first fixture. The occasion also launched this season’s campaign under the theme “Abasaadha ne’mpango”, which means men are the pillars in ending teenage pregnancies.
Bugweri settled the contest in the 62nd minute when Ali Kiyemba headed in from Tom Babalanda’s corner. The goal gave the visitors all three points and placed them on the board at the start of the competition, while Busiki were left without a point from their opening match.
Kiyemba had earlier missed an opportunity to put Bugweri ahead. In the 53rd minute, Babalanda’s delivery sent him through against goalkeeper Collin Wesonga, but he shot over the crossbar. Fifteen minutes after his goal, Kiyemba controlled the ball inside the area before sending another effort narrowly wide.
Busiki appeared to have found an equaliser three minutes from time when substitute Nicolas Mukibi finished an attack. The goal was disallowed after he was judged to have been offside, denying the home side a share of the points.
Babalanda was selected as the match’s best player and will receive UGX 200,000 from MTN Uganda. Busiki captain Tibita Rajabu was named the second-best player and will collect UGX 100,000. Bugweri will host Bukooli Namayingo on 30 August, while Busiki travel to Bukooli Bugiri. Bugweri’s team said it had been assembled late, unlike opponents who had played two friendlies, but its target remains reaching at least the quarter-finals.
