Antoine Semenyo renews Ghana commitment despite England eligibility

Antoine Semenyo has reaffirmed his commitment to Ghana, saying the affection he receives from the country remains central to his decision to represent the Black Stars. The Manchester City forward was eligible to play for England at senior level but chose Ghana, the country of his parents.

Semenyo was born in England to Ghanaian parents. He said his connection to Ghana has given him a strong sense of pride, with his parents’ roots making international representation for the West African nation especially meaningful to him.

The 26-year-old has already featured for Ghana at major tournaments, including the Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup. His performances for the national team, however, have not yet reached the level he has produced regularly for Manchester City.

Semenyo identified strength, pace and excitement as qualities linked to his Ghanaian heritage. He also associated his international role with the attacking skills he wants to show, including tricks, flicks and goals, while highlighting the warmth he feels from Ghanaian supporters.

His choice came despite the possibility of pursuing an England career. Instead, he has continued with Ghana and described that decision as a dream fulfilled because of his family’s background and the support he receives whenever the Black Stars play.

Semenyo is preparing for the new season with Manchester City and is scheduled to make his first appearance of the campaign in the Community Shield against Arsenal on Sunday, August 16. He joined City from Bournemouth in the 2025/26 season after previously moving to Bournemouth from Bristol City.
