Jeff Bezos-backed group buys one-third stake in Liverpool

Fenway Sports Group has agreed to sell a minority stake in Liverpool to a consortium led by Amit Bhatia and including Jeff Bezos and Eduardo Saverin.

Fenway Sports Group (FSG) has entered a definitive agreement to sell a strategic minority investment of approximately one-third of Liverpool to a consortium known as 1892 Holdings. The group is led by Amit Bhatia and includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is also part of the consortium through his venture capital firm, K5 Sports, marking his first involvement in sports ownership.

While Bezos is a major investor in K5 Sports, he will not join the Liverpool board. Instead, Bryan Baum, the founder of K5 Sports, will join the Anfield board alongside Elaine Saverin. Amit Bhatia is set to become the vice-chairman of the club and will join an expanded board once regulatory approval is granted. Bhatia previously served as a director and co-owner at Queens Park Rangers for 18 years.

FSG will maintain majority ownership and operational control of the club. The agreement includes an option for the consortium to increase its investment in the future, though no commitments have been made regarding a change in majority ownership. The investment is intended to support long-term growth by integrating expertise from the technology, investment, and global business sectors.

This transaction will not change the club's approach to the transfer window, and there is no new or separate transfer budget linked to this deal. FSG stated that the move was not driven by financial necessity, noting that the club recently reported record revenues of £703m for the 2024-25 financial year. The leadership was instead attracted by the consortium's reach across Asia and India.

Since FSG purchased the club in 2010 for £300m, the valuation of Liverpool has increased significantly. The proposed sale of the 30% stake is expected to provide FSG with more than £1.5bn. This follows a period of significant growth for the club, which includes winning the Premier League in 2024-25 and a Champions League title in 2019.
