Marco Silva faces internal doubts at Benfica after Fulham exit

Marco Silva is facing an immediate challenge at Benfica following his summer move from Fulham. While the transition offered the chance to manage a major Portuguese institution and compete for trophies, the manager is navigating significant internal and structural difficulties.

Reports indicate that Silva does not currently possess the full backing of the Benfica squad. Although there was initial excitement regarding his appointment, that sentiment faded quickly. Distrust regarding his coaching methods and tactical approach began to emerge during the final weeks of pre-season, prior to the start of competitive fixtures.

The manager's task is complicated by the club's recent domestic struggles. Benfica finished the previous season in third place with 80 points, trailing eight points behind champions Porto and two points behind Sporting. This result meant the club missed out on Champions League group stage football, a significant blow to their prestige and revenue.

Recruitment issues have further strained the relationship between the manager and the club. Silva has reportedly been unsatisfied after the club failed to secure several targets he identified as attainable and affordable. While the club has high operating revenue, it remains dependent on player sales to manage debts and financial commitments, often leaving limited spending power for replacements.

Transfer decisions have also caused friction. Silva approved the €30m sale of young captain António Silva to Bournemouth, a move that was unpopular with the supporters. Conversely, he has blocked the sale of Andreas Schjelderup to protect his sporting project, despite the club's need for the income that such a sale would provide.

Internal tensions are also evident in the squad selection, specifically regarding goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin. The Ukrainian international has become a leader at the club, and the lack of trust from Silva in the player adds to the complexities of the dressing room. Silva must now attempt to improve the club's sporting trajectory while managing these internal pressures.
