Aubameyang scores in LaLiga debut as Arteta criticism returns after 1-1
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored Deportivo’s first top-flight goal in eight years on debut, while Arsenal supporters renewed criticism of Mikel Arteta.
Deportivo La Coruña drew 1-1 with Elche in their 2026/27 LaLiga opener as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang marked his return to Spain with a goal. The Gabonese forward struck in the 21st minute, delivering Deportivo’s first top-flight goal in eight years.
Aubameyang started at the Estadio Riazor after joining Deportivo from Olympique de Marseille in a €1.7 million summer move. The 37-year-old former Arsenal captain led the attack and remained on the pitch for 85 minutes.
His left-footed finish quickly became the main talking point from the match. Aubameyang had two attempts on target and converted one of them, giving the newly promoted side the lead before Elche equalised.
The goal also revived criticism of Mikel Arteta among Arsenal supporters. Some argued that Aubameyang’s continued scoring form in France and Spain contradicted the view that the striker had declined during the final part of his Arsenal spell.
Aubameyang left north London during Arteta’s tenure, and his debut for Deportivo gave critics of that decision fresh material. Supporters pointed to his movement and finishing, qualities they believe have remained effective despite the loss of some of the pace that defined his earlier career.
The performance continued a career that has taken Aubameyang through several leagues and clubs. His contract with Deportivo runs until June 2028, giving the club a proven attacking option as it begins life back in Spain’s top division.
