Banyana Banyana beat Nigeria 2-1 to reach FIFA playoffs

Banyana Banyana secured a 2-1 victory over Nigeria on Thursday to qualify for the FIFA playoff tournament. The match was held at the Moulay Rachid Stadium in Casablanca, Morocco.

The win ensures that South Africa will compete for a place in next year’s Women’s World Cup in Brazil. The decisive result came during a competitive encounter where the South African side managed to outscore their opponents.

South Africa broke the deadlock in the 56th minute through Thembi Kgatlana. She found the back of the net after being played through by a well-placed pass from Hilda Magaia. The momentum stayed with the South African side as they continued to press forward in the second half.

Captain Refiloe Jane extended the lead to 2-0 in the 77th minute. She struck a shot from the edge of the penalty area that beat the Nigerian goalkeeper. Although Nigeria managed to score a goal to make the final score 2-1, the South African defense remained resilient to protect the lead.

Goalkeeper Kaylin Swart was named Woman of the Match for her role in the victory. Her series of saves prevented the Nigerians from equalising and kept South Africa in control of the result.

The next stage of the FIFA qualification process is scheduled for November 2026. This playoff phase will consist of six teams in total. The tournament will include two teams from Africa, two from Asia, and one team each from South America and Oceania.
