Farouk Miya returns to Vipers to bolster midfield depth

Farouk Miya has returned to Vipers SC following a ten-year career playing in foreign leagues. The midfielder, who was a standout player in the Ugandan league in 2015, joins a squad that recently secured the UPL title. His arrival adds further depth to a midfield unit that already includes Joel Sserunjogi, Enock Ssebagala, Paul Mbowa, Marvin Youngman, Amour Munogera, and Abdul Karim Watambala.

Miya's career outside Uganda includes stints at clubs such as Standard Liege, Mouscron, Sebail, Gorica, Konyaspor, and Lviv. He previously helped Vipers win their second league title before moving to Belgium in 2016. Now back at Kitende, he joins a team aiming to defend their domestic title and progress in the CAF Champions League.

Tactical options for coach Denis Lavagne have shifted during recent matches in the Cecafa Kagame Cup and a friendly against Nairobi United. While Miya has functioned as a box-to-box number eight in the past, he is currently more effective in a number ten role. This creates competition with Abdul Karim Watambala, who occupied that position last season and contributed several goals and assists.

Lavagne has experimented with different configurations to accommodate both players. In some setups, Miya has played as a number ten with Sserunjogi in a double pivot. In a match against Nairobi United, Watambala was deployed on the left wing, while Marvin Youngman and Sserunjogi operated as the double pivot in front of the defense.

Another possibility involves using Watambala's energy as a number eight alongside Sserunjogi, allowing Miya to play behind the striker. Such a formation would require leaving out established midfielders like Enock Ssebagala or Marvin Youngman. The addition of Miya provides the reigning champions with more variation and quality in an already strong midfield department.
