Bayern Munich 3-1 Leipzig: Nigerian-born Musiala declared fine
Jamal Musiala was cleared after appearing to faint in Bayern Munich’s 3-1 pre-season win over RB Leipzig, two minutes after scoring.
Bayern Munich beat RB Leipzig 3-1 in a pre-season friendly, but the result was overshadowed by concern over Nigerian-born midfielder Jamal Musiala. The 23-year-old appeared to faint in temperatures of 33C shortly after scoring for Bayern.
Musiala had entered as a substitute in the 69th minute and helped extend Bayern’s advantage late in the match. Two minutes after his goal, he looked disoriented while waiting for play to resume before losing his balance.
Ismael Saibari caught Musiala as he began to fall, while Joshua Kimmich also moved quickly to assist. Medical staff treated the midfielder on the pitch as Bayern players gathered around him, then gave a thumbs-up before he was helped away from the field.
Bayern sporting director Max Eberl later said Musiala was fine, making his condition the priority after the incident. He could be available for Bayern’s competitive start against Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup this weekend.
The victory continues a generally positive run for Bayern, who have recorded three wins, one draw and one defeat in their five listed matches. Their recent results include wins over VfB Stuttgart, FC Koln and VfL Wolfsburg, a draw with Paris Saint-Germain and a defeat by SV Wehen.
Musiala has previously missed more than six months after a leg fracture suffered during pre-season last year, limiting him to 15 league appearances in the following campaign. Born in Stuttgart to a Nigerian-British father and a German mother with Polish roots, he joined Bayern in 2019 after growing up in England and pledged his international future to Germany in 2021.
