Benjamin Fredrick Set for Brentford Return Ahead of AFCON Qualifiers
Nigeria defender Benjamin Fredrick is expected to resume full training and matches for Brentford before returning for September’s AFCON qualifiers.
Nigeria defender Benjamin Fredrick is expected to resume full training with Brentford by the end of August, with matches also planned before the AFCON qualifiers in September. His return follows a lengthy absence from competitive football.
Fredrick has not played in any of Brentford’s pre-season matches so far, despite being included in the club’s squad for its training tour of Portugal. The Premier League side recently confirmed his promotion to the first team.
The 19-year-old has already recovered from the injury that interrupted his progress last season while he was on loan at Belgian club FC Dender. However, Brentford have been taking a cautious approach to his return after he missed competitive action from November.
The club’s medical team is guiding the next stage of his rehabilitation and believes he should be ready for full training at the end of the month. The plan also includes a return to match involvement, provided there is no setback.
Fredrick’s absence from Brentford’s pre-season fixtures has therefore been part of a managed reintegration rather than a sign that he remains injured. His inclusion in the first-team group shows that he remains part of the club’s plans as he works towards full fitness.
If his recovery continues without complications, the defender is expected to be available for Nigeria’s senior squad when the Super Eagles resume their AFCON qualifying campaign in September. That would give him the chance to return to international duty after his interrupted club season.
