Black Meteors receive bye for U-23 AFCON 2027 second-round qualifier

Ghana’s Black Meteors have been placed directly into the second round of the TotalEnergies CAF U-23 Africa Cup of Nations Egypt 2027 qualifiers. They will meet either Togo or Libya after the two nations complete their first-round tie.

The pathway was confirmed during Tuesday’s qualifying draw in Cairo. Ghana avoided the opening round, but its opponent in the next stage will depend on the outcome between Togo and Libya.

A place in the final qualifying round would bring another potential opponent into view. The Black Meteors would face the team that emerges from the second-round tie involving São Tomé and Príncipe, Equatorial Guinea or Niger.

The qualifying competition will be played over three rounds and will produce seven finalists. Those teams will join host nation Egypt for an eight-team U-23 AFCON tournament.

The competition will also decide Africa’s representatives at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. Ghana must finish among the continent’s top two teams at the finals to claim one of Africa’s two Olympic places.

The Olympic objective gives the qualifying campaign particular significance for Ghana. The Black Meteors have not appeared in the men’s Olympic football tournament since the 2004 Athens Games, leaving the team seeking a return after a 24-year absence in 2028.
