Blacks Power appoint Mugerwa for 2026/27 UPL return season
Blacks Power have named CAF A-licensed coach Simon Peter Mugerwa as head coach as the promoted club prepares for the 2026/27 UPL season.
Blacks Power have appointed Simon Peter Ssalongo Mugerwa as head coach for the 2026/27 Uganda Premier League season. The Lira-based club is returning to the top flight after winning automatic promotion through the FUFA Big League.
Mugerwa holds a CAF A licence and will take charge of the Black Warriors as they prepare for their return to Uganda’s highest division. He has previously coached Police FC, Mbarara City and Lugazi FC, giving him experience of managing teams in the domestic game.
Michael Lukyamuzi, known as “Skillz”, will remain involved after leading Blacks Power to promotion. Mugerwa is expected to work with Lukyamuzi and the existing backroom staff, keeping continuity around the group that delivered the club’s return to the UPL.
The appointment gives Mugerwa responsibility for turning that promotion-winning foundation into a squad capable of competing in the top division. His early work will include bringing in targeted recruits and shaping a competitive team before the new campaign begins.
Blacks Power’s recent five-match sequence was uneven, with two wins, two defeats and a draw. They beat Express 3-1 and Gaddafi 3-2, lost 1-0 away to SC Villa and 1-0 at Onduparaka, then drew 1-1 with URA. The run produced seven goals and conceded six.
The club’s return follows a previous single-season stay in the UPL, making Mugerwa’s appointment part of an effort to establish Blacks Power more firmly among Uganda’s top-flight sides. The 2026/27 campaign will be the next test of that objective.
