Egypt coach Hossam Hassan reportedly collapses in wives’ fight

Egypt coach Hossam Hassan reportedly collapsed while trying to break up a fight involving his two wives. Egypt lead AFCON 2025 with seven points from three matches, having scored three goals and conceded one.

The incident allegedly happened during a holiday at Porto Marina, on Egypt’s north coast. An argument between Hassan’s long-term wife, Howaida Al-Gharbawi, and his second wife, Dina “Dan Adam” Mustafa, reportedly turned physical inside a luxury hotel café. The confrontation included hair-pulling and took place in front of other holidaymakers.

Hassan is said to have fainted as he attempted to intervene. However, his lawyer rejected claims that the coach had suffered a health crisis and said Hassan was in good health. The conflicting accounts leave the reported collapse unconfirmed.

The dispute was followed by the end of Hassan’s marriage to Howaida. He formally signed the divorce documents at a registrar’s office in Cairo after decades together; they have three children. Howaida’s family lawyer declined to discuss the separation, while the legal representative of Dan Adam said his client had been subjected to a deliberate attack during the Porto Marina incident.

Hassan married Dan Adam in 2015 while still married to Howaida. The couple briefly separated in 2022 before reconciling. Egyptian law permits a Muslim man to have up to four wives, while officials must notify existing wives when a new marriage is registered.

The personal controversy comes while Hassan remains in charge of Egypt. His side are unbeaten in AFCON 2025 after two wins and a draw, while their last five matches overall have produced one victory, three draws and one defeat: a 3-2 loss to Argentina, draws against Australia, Iran and Belgium, and a 3-1 win over New Zealand. Hassan has coached Egypt since 2024, led the team to the World Cup last 16 this summer, and later renewed his contract through 2030.
