Cagliari striker Yael Trepy leaves induced coma after pool incident

Cagliari forward Yael Trepy is alert and breathing without mechanical support after a near-drowning incident, but remains in intensive care.

Cagliari striker Yael Trepy has regained consciousness after being placed in a medically induced coma following a near-drowning incident in a swimming pool on Sunday. The 20-year-old French forward is now breathing without mechanical ventilation and remains under intensive care at Santissima Annunziata Hospital in Sassari, Sardinia.

Doctors have described Trepy as fully alert and responsive, with no signs of neurological impairment. His respiratory and cardiovascular condition is stable as he continues to receive treatment at the hospital.

Trepy got into difficulty in the deep end of the pool, where he was unable to reach the bottom, and inhaled a substantial amount of water. Medical staff then used sedation and ventilator support while treating him in intensive care.

Those measures have since been reduced gradually to allow him to regain consciousness naturally. The latest assessment indicates that he no longer needs the breathing machine, although he has not yet been discharged from the intensive care unit.

The incident is expected to keep Trepy out of Cagliari’s Serie A season opener against Parma on the 22nd. His recovery remains the immediate focus while he continues to be monitored in Sassari.

Trepy joined Cagliari in 2022 and made an impression during his Serie A debut. His absence would remove the young forward from the squad for the opening fixture as he continues his recovery from the pool accident.
