Egypt coach Hossam Hassan reportedly faints during family brawl
Egypt coach Hossam Hassan reportedly fainted while breaking up a fight between his two wives before divorcing his first wife, Howaida El-Gharbawy.
Egypt coach Hossam Hassan reportedly fainted while trying to stop a fight between his two wives before later divorcing his first wife. Egypt currently lead AFCON 2025 with seven points from three matches, having recorded two wins, one draw and a 3-1 goal record.
The incident took place at a hotel cafe in Porto Marina, on Egypt’s north coast. Hassan’s first wife, Howaida El-Gharbawy, and his second wife, Dina Mostafa, were involved in an argument that developed into a physical confrontation.
Relatives and hotel security intervened as the dispute escalated. Both women were reported to have suffered cuts and bruises. Hassan attempted to separate them but then lost consciousness, with some accounts saying he was taken to hospital.
However, Hassan’s lawyer rejected claims that the coach had suffered a serious medical crisis and said he was in good health. Mohamed Shams, who represents Dina, confirmed that Hassan had divorced Howaida after the incident. The separation was also reported to have been completed at a registrar’s office in Cairo.
Hassan and Howaida have three children. The couple had previously separated in 2022 before reconciling 10 days later. Hassan married Dina in 2015 while still married to Howaida. Egyptian law permits a man to have up to four wives, but existing and future wives must be informed when another marriage takes place.
The personal dispute follows a mixed run for Hassan’s Egypt side. Before their AFCON 2025 campaign, Egypt lost 3-2 to Argentina, drew 1-1 with Australia and Iran, beat New Zealand 3-1 and drew 1-1 with Belgium. Their tournament record is stronger, leaving them unbeaten and top of the standings after three games.
