Cameroon and Malawi reach WAFCON semifinals after wins

Cameroon and Malawi have secured the final two places in the Women's Africa Cup of Nations semifinals. Both teams won their quarterfinal matches on Sunday to advance in the tournament.

Cameroon eliminated the defending champions, Nigeria, with a 1-0 victory. Myriam Maéva Nyadjou scored the only goal of the match to decide the tightly contested encounter. Malawi completed a comeback against Ghana to win 2-1. Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah gave the Black Queens an early lead seven minutes into the game, but Malawi responded quickly. Captain Temwa Chawinga equalized five minutes later, and Rose Kadzere scored the winning goal during the second half.

These victories also earned both Malawi and Cameroon direct qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup. They join Morocco and Algeria as the African nations that have already secured their places in the global tournament. The four quarterfinal losers—Nigeria, Ghana, Ivory Coast, and South Africa—must now compete for the final available World Cup slot.

The semifinal matchups are set for Wednesday. Malawi will play against Algeria, while Cameroon is scheduled to face the host nation, Morocco.
