Carl Froch says Floyd Mayweather would beat Terence Crawford

Carl Froch has backed Floyd Mayweather Jr, a 50-0 former champion, to defeat Terence Crawford in a prime-versus-prime fantasy bout. Crawford finished his career unbeaten after facing 42 opponents across 17 years, but Froch believes Mayweather’s style and achievements would have made the difference at welterweight.

Froch made the assessment during an episode of ‘Froch on Fighting’, selecting Mayweather as the fighter most likely to end Crawford’s perfect record. Mayweather won world titles in five divisions and produced his most notable period at 147 pounds, where he defeated Manny Pacquiao and Shane Mosley.

Crawford’s career included a historic run through three weight classes. He became the first post-war boxer to win undisputed championships in three divisions, beginning at super-lightweight in 2015 with victories over Thomas Dulorme, Viktor Postol and Julius Indongo.

The Omaha fighter then moved to welterweight and stopped Jeff Horn on his debut at 147 pounds to take the WBO title. He made five defences before meeting Errol Spence Jr in 2023, when a ninth-round stoppage gave Crawford all four major belts in the division.

Crawford later moved through super-welterweight, where he defeated Israil Madrimov, before stepping up to super-middleweight against Canelo Alvarez. He won that undisputed championship challenge by outboxing Alvarez and retired three months later.

Mayweather has been linked with a possible return, but Crawford has indicated that he would not come out of retirement to face him. The former undisputed champion considers Mayweather too old and no longer at his best, leaving Froch’s view as a hypothetical contest between two unbeaten stars from different eras.
