Carragher doubts Carrick can win Premier League, Champions League
Jamie Carragher believes Michael Carrick can steady Manchester United but lacks the quality to lead the club to Premier League or Champions League glory.
Jamie Carragher does not believe Manchester United can win either the Premier League or the Champions League with Michael Carrick as manager. The former Liverpool defender said Carrick had done a good job, but questioned whether he possessed the quality needed to deliver the biggest trophies.
Carragher’s view is that United’s rivals are not currently intimidated by the club under Carrick. He argued that winning the league requires an exceptional manager with an added level of quality beyond simply stabilising the team.
He did not say Carrick’s tenure was certain to fail. Instead, Carragher credited the manager with helping United avoid the constant disruption and attention that had surrounded the club. He suggested the team would benefit from maintaining that stability for another 12 months.
Carragher also said Carrick could guide United back towards becoming a consistent Champions League club. In his assessment, that progress could leave the team in a stronger position before eventually appointing a manager capable of winning the Champions League.
The comments also included criticism of United’s decision not to sign midfielder Mateus Fernandes for £85 million. Carragher said he had been surprised by the club’s reluctance, particularly because Fernandes is young and top-level midfielders are now rarely available for around £50 million.
For Carragher, the issue is not whether Carrick can produce a successful season. He believes the manager may improve United’s position and provide a calmer foundation, while still falling short of the level required to win the Premier League or Champions League.
