Charlton hail Nigeria goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo after Wrexham move
Charlton Athletic have welcomed Nigeria goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo from Wrexham, praising his proven ability after a strong Championship campaign.
Charlton Athletic have praised new goalkeeper Arthur Chukwuezugo Okonkwo after completing his loan move from Championship rivals Wrexham. The London club described the Nigeria international as an outstanding goalkeeper with proven ability as he begins his latest spell in the English second tier.
Okonkwo is Charlton’s eighth signing of the summer and arrives after recording 46 clean sheets in 121 appearances for Wrexham. He played 39 Championship matches last season, although he was not involved in Wrexham’s opening league fixture against Cardiff City.
Charlton managing director James Rodwell said the goalkeeper’s arrival reflected the standard of players the club is attracting during its second season back in the Championship. He also expressed the club’s expectation that Okonkwo will make a significant contribution during the campaign.
The move keeps the 24-year-old in the Championship despite his progress with Nigeria. He was born in London and started his football career at Hampstead before developing through Arsenal’s youth system. He has also represented Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz.
Okonkwo’s arrival at Charlton carries an added connection with The Valley, where he made his Nigeria debut during the 2026 Unity Cup. He kept clean sheets in the matches against Zimbabwe and Jamaica at the stadium, helping Nigeria win the semi-final 2-0 and the final 3-0.
FIFA confirmed his switch of international allegiance from England to Nigeria on April 6, 2026. He had represented England at under-17 level before receiving his first senior call-up, and has since played four matches for the Super Eagles under Éric Chelle.
After those two clean sheets in the Unity Cup, Okonkwo conceded in Nigeria’s 2-2 draw with Poland and 2-1 defeat by Portugal. Both matches were away friendlies. His next task is to establish himself at Charlton and build on the Championship experience gained during his time with Wrexham.
