Benjamin Fredrick listed among African outsiders for EPL season

Brentford defender Benjamin Fredrick has been identified as one of the African outsiders seeking a breakthrough in the new English Premier League season.

Brentford defender Benjamin Fredrick has been named among the African outsiders expected to challenge for greater recognition in the new English Premier League season. The 21-year-old Nigerian has also signed a four-year contract and been moved into Brentford’s first-team squad.

Fredrick’s rise is notable because he moved from Nigeria’s domestic league into the Premier League system. He began at Simoiben Football Academy in Kaduna before joining ABS FC of Ilorin for the 2021/2022 season. He made his ABS debut in February 2022 and moved to Nasarawa United in October of that year.

Brentford took him on loan in August 2023 with an option to make the arrangement permanent. That option has now been exercised, giving the defender a full contract and a route into first-team Premier League football. Fredrick can operate at centre-back or right-back.

He spent the 2025/2026 season on loan at Belgian club Dender, where he was described as having a successful campaign. He had also been expected to start for Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations before a knee injury shortly before the tournament ruled him out.

Fredrick was placed in a group of African players viewed as potential challengers rather than among the leading names expected to dominate the season. Tottenham Hotspur’s Mohammed Kudus, Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye and Newcastle United’s Yoane Wissa were included in the same category.

The leading African prospects identified were Ghana and Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo, Manchester City’s Egyptian attacker Omar Marmoush, Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo of Manchester United and Senegal’s Ismaila Sarr of Crystal Palace. No Nigerian player was included in that leading group, with Alex Iwobi, Calvin Bassey, Ola Aina, Semi Ajayi and Taiwo Awoniyi also absent from the selection.

Fredrick’s inclusion therefore marks recognition of his rapid progress rather than an established status in the Premier League. His path from academy football and the NPFL to Brentford’s senior squad has placed him among the young African players seeking to make a significant impact this season.
