Caleb Yirenkyi makes Premier League debut in Coventry's 3-0 loss
Caleb Yirenkyi started Coventry City's Premier League opener against Arsenal, but the champions won 3-0 at Emirates Stadium.
Coventry City began the 2026/27 English Premier League season with a 3-0 defeat away to Arsenal. Caleb Yirenkyi, 20, made his full debut for Coventry after being named in the starting line-up at Emirates Stadium on Friday, 21 August.
Arsenal, the defending champions, took control before half-time. Kai Havertz opened the scoring after Riccardo Calafiori supplied the cross, with the forward directing his finish into the bottom-right corner.
Bukayo Saka added the second before the half-hour mark. Declan Rice advanced through midfield and released Tsolis on the left, whose low delivery was not held by Coventry goalkeeper Rushworth. The loose ball fell for Saka, who finished from close range.
Martin Odegaard completed the scoring in the second half. Saka created the opening by finding Ben White on the right, and White’s cutback reached Odegaard inside the penalty area. His effort was mishandled before crossing the line.
The match marked an important step for Yirenkyi, who joined Coventry as the club’s record signing in a £26m transfer from Danish Superliga side Nordsjaelland. The midfielder developed at Ghana’s Right to Dream Academy before moving to Europe.
Coventry are listed seventh with 0 points from 0 matches and a 0-0 goal record in the league data. Their recent results before the Arsenal fixture were a 0-0 draw at Northampton Town, a 4-0 win at Watford, a 3-1 victory over Wrexham, a 5-1 success against Portsmouth and a 1-1 draw at Blackburn. They return to league action against Hull City on 29 August.
