Chelle faces Super Eagles selection headache after Uche surgery
Nigeria forward Christantus Uche will miss the season after right-knee surgery, creating a selection problem for coach Chelle.
Christantus Uche, 23, will miss the rest of the season after undergoing surgery on a serious right-knee injury, leaving Super Eagles coach Chelle with a selection problem. The Getafe centre-forward is also expected to miss Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign and any finals that follow.
Uche was injured on August 6 during Getafe’s pre-season preparations after a heavy challenge from Christian Mawissa forced him from the field on a stretcher. Subsequent examinations found multiple ligament and meniscus tears in his right knee, leading to the decision to operate.
The injury comes after a difficult spell at Crystal Palace. Uche made 22 appearances for the Premier League club last season but played only 477 minutes, with Palace deciding against taking up the option to sign him permanently. He has since returned to Getafe, where he had been involved in preparations for the new campaign.
Uche confirmed that the operation had gone well in an update to supporters from his hospital bed. He thanked the medical team, his agent and the staff and players at Getafe for their support, while also acknowledging the messages and prayers he received during the injury setback.
The forward said his focus had now shifted to rehabilitation and a gradual return to football. His absence removes an option from Nigeria’s attacking group at a time when the team will be preparing for the 2027 AFCON qualifying schedule.
Uche joined Getafe from AD Ceuta in the 2024/25 season after previously playing for Moralo CP. His market value is listed at €12 million, with Crystal Palace recorded as his current valuation club, but his immediate priority is recovery from the knee damage.
