Chris Morris says MI Cape Town face pressure in SA20 Season 5

MI Cape Town will enter SA20 Season 5 under pressure to rebuild their squad, former South Africa all-rounder Chris Morris says. The franchise finished bottom of the table in its most recent campaign with three wins, after winning the competition the season before.

Morris believes the expectations are higher because MI Cape Town are part of the Mumbai Indians group. He said the franchise needs to assemble a team capable of performing consistently, rather than relying only on the reputation of its global brand.

The side has retained several key players from the group that delivered success in the competition’s third season. Captain Rashid Khan, Kagiso Rabada, Nicholas Pooran and Ryan Rickelton remain with the franchise, while England all-rounder Will Jacks has been signed ahead of the new campaign.

Morris said the retained players still possess the quality to influence matches, despite the team’s poor latest season. He added that a difficult tournament does not make established players less capable, particularly when the squad includes performers such as Khan, Rabada and Rickelton.

He also identified experience as an area MI Cape Town may need to address when the auction takes place. Morris said the franchise could look for another leadership presence to strengthen the group, while stressing that winning a tournament requires depth across the squad rather than only a handful of high-profile players.

Head coach Robin Peterson will oversee the squad-building process. Morris pointed to Peterson’s knowledge of South African cricket and his work with the Warriors as an advantage when identifying local players. The franchise’s retention of its successful core gives it a foundation, but its latest bottom-place finish means the auction will be important in determining whether MI Cape Town can return to contention in SA20 Season 5.
