Coventry agree Taiwo Awoniyi move for Lampard’s Premier League squad

Coventry City have agreed a permanent transfer for Nigeria striker Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest, with the forward undergoing his medical before the move is completed. The newly promoted Premier League club are adding the 28-year-old to Frank Lampard’s squad on a long-term contract.

Awoniyi is set to become the second Super Eagles player recruited by Lampard since Coventry returned to the top flight. He will join midfielder Frank Onyeka, whose move from Brentford became permanent after he helped the club win the 2025/26 EFL Championship title.

Lampard took charge in November 2024 and guided Coventry back to the Premier League after a 25-year absence. The manager has since agreed a contract extension running until 2029 as the club builds for its first top-flight campaign since promotion.

The transfer gives Coventry a forward with extensive Premier League experience. Awoniyi made 103 appearances in all competitions during four years at Nottingham Forest, scoring 23 goals and creating six assists. He scored 21 of those goals in 90 Premier League appearances.

His time at Forest was affected by repeated injury problems, which limited his run of starts and allowed other forwards to take prominent roles. He joined Forest from Union Berlin in 2022 after earlier spending time in Liverpool’s system without making a first-team appearance for the club. Awoniyi was also part of Nigeria’s squad that won the 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Cup.

Coventry’s recent results show three wins and two draws in their last five matches: a 4-0 victory at Watford, a 3-1 win over Wrexham, a 5-1 success against Portsmouth, and draws with Northampton Town and Blackburn. Their next listed fixture is against Arsenal on August 21, 2026, in the Premier League, giving Lampard’s new striker a top-flight setting for his next chapter once the transfer is formally completed.
