Wanderers honour legendary supporter Gogo Karonga at unveiling

Mighty Wanderers FC has paid tribute to Ellen Karonga, a prominent supporter known as "Gogo Karonga," during a tombstone unveiling ceremony. The event took place at Chiwinja Village in Traditional Authority Mpama, located in the Chiradzulu District.

Karonga died on May 10, 2024, at the age of 78. The ceremony served to honour her memory alongside her late husband, Neckson, and their eldest daughter, Iris. The club continues to mourn her loss more than two years after her passing.

Since the 1970s, Karonga was a recognisable figure at matches due to her distinctive clothing. She frequently wore outfits featuring the national flag and the colours of Wanderers. David Kanyenda, the club's director of football, spoke on behalf of president Thomson Mpinganjira, noting that the club misses the flair and elegance she provided on matchdays.

Kanyenda described the late supporter as an icon whose loyalty and personal style were linked to the identity of the club. The gathering included several prominent individuals, such as former Wanderers chairperson Humphreys Mvula and former diplomat and minister Ziliro Chibambo.

Karonga is survived by five children. Among those in attendance was her child, Willet Karonga, who serves as the secretary general for the United Transformation Movement (UTM).
