Du Toit relishes special Springboks-All Blacks Test at Ellis Park

Springbok captain Pieter-Steph du Toit says facing the All Blacks at Ellis Park will be a special occasion as Damian de Allende reaches 100 Tests.

Pieter-Steph du Toit, a two-time World Rugby Player of the Year, says the Springboks’ first Test against the All Blacks at Ellis Park will be a special occasion. Damian de Allende will also reach 100 Test appearances for South Africa in Saturday’s match.

Du Toit described the four-match series against New Zealand as a major honour for the Springboks. He said the chance to play the All Blacks in South Africa, particularly at Ellis Park, carried added significance for him and the team.

The Johannesburg stadium has a strong place in South African rugby history. Du Toit recalled the importance of singing the national anthem there in front of the Springbok supporters and pointed to the 1995 Rugby World Cup final, which South Africa won at Ellis Park.

He also paid tribute to De Allende’s career before the midfielder’s milestone appearance. Du Toit said he first noticed De Allende during his time with the Stormers, when he stood out for his powerful ball-carrying and defensive work. He added that De Allende’s development on and off the field had earned his deep respect.

The Springbok captain is also preparing to face the haka again. He said Tony Brown, part of the coaching staff, had helped the squad understand its significance to the All Blacks, while each player would bring an individual meaning to the moment.

Du Toit stressed that South Africa would not approach the haka casually. He said the team would meet it with respect and accept the challenge before the opening Test of the series at a ground he considers close to his heart.
