Dugarry condemns Alvarez over Atletico exit push amid Barcelona link

Christophe Dugarry has criticised Julian Alvarez and his representatives after the Atletico Madrid forward declared his intention to leave amid Barcelona interest.

Christophe Dugarry has criticised Julian Alvarez and his representatives over the forward’s decision to publicly seek a departure from Atletico Madrid. The former FIFA World Cup winner said the 26-year-old Argentine had handled the situation poorly.

Alvarez made his desire to leave Atletico known during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Barcelona have been linked with the striker, but Atletico are determined not to let him move to their LaLiga rivals during the summer transfer window.

Dugarry argued that Alvarez should have managed the matter privately instead of declaring his intentions publicly. He said the player’s representatives also deserved blame and questioned the wisdom of creating tension with both the club and its supporters.

The criticism came after Atletico fans turned against Alvarez during the team’s 2-2 draw with Villarreal in their opening LaLiga match of the season. Supporters booed the forward and called for him to leave, reflecting the hostility that has followed his attempt to secure an exit.

Dugarry said players who want to move should be allowed to pursue that option, but maintained that respect must remain central to negotiations. In his view, publicly offending the club and its fans makes an agreement harder to reach rather than helping the player find a solution.

Atletico’s refusal to approve a move to Barcelona has left Alvarez without the route he appears to prefer. Arsenal could offer another possibility, with the Premier League club reportedly interested in the Argentine and ready to make an approach if he signals that he would accept the move.
