Edson Barboza considers retirement ahead of UFC 330

Edson Barboza has suggested that retirement may be approaching for the Brazilian veteran. The 40-year-old fighter is preparing for his bout against Esteban Ribovics at UFC 330 this Saturday in Philadelphia.

Barboza has struggled in recent outings, suffering three consecutive losses. His last victory in the octagon occurred in 2023 during a win over Sodiq Yusuff. While he is returning to the city where he fought Justin Gaethje in 2019, he says his focus remains entirely on his upcoming opponent.

During the UFC 330 media day, Barboza noted that he is not currently thinking about his future beyond this weekend. He explained that throughout his career, he usually begins planning his next fight just one week after a bout concludes. This time, however, he is focused solely on the immediate task.

The prospect of leaving the sport is linked to his desire to spend more time with his wife and children. Barboza, who lives in Florida, shared an instance where he had to go inside to rest and manage his weight cut while his family played outside in the heat. He noted that missing these moments makes him consider if it is time to stop fighting.

This contemplation follows a loss to Jalin Turner last December, which initially prompted thoughts of retirement. Barboza stated that he does not want to continue missing important time with his children, adding that he is still undecided on whether he will fight again after Saturday.
