EPL: Bruno Fernandes rejects Manchester United contract offer

Bruno Fernandes has turned down Manchester United’s opening renewal proposal, but talks are continuing over his future at Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes has rejected Manchester United’s initial offer for a new contract, although discussions over an improved agreement remain ongoing. The 31-year-old Portugal international still wants to stay at Old Trafford, and his refusal of the first proposal has not been presented as a decision to leave the club.

The opening package reportedly included an annual increase of only €500,000, which did not meet Fernandes’ expectations. His existing Manchester United contract runs until 2027 and contains an option for an additional season, giving the club protection beyond the current agreement.

The negotiations are focused on several key points. Fernandes and United must still find common ground on his salary and the length of any new deal. The release clause in his present contract, valued at about €65 million, is also under discussion, including whether it should remain, be removed or be changed.

Fernandes joined Manchester United from Sporting in January 2020 after the English club paid €65 million. He has since become captain and a central figure in the team. His record for United stands at 327 appearances, 107 goals and 108 assists, while his current market value is listed at €35 million.

The uncertainty has attracted interest from elsewhere. Galatasaray are reportedly preparing a £42.7 million proposal and a salary package that could double Fernandes’ present earnings. Atletico Madrid, Juventus and AC Milan have also been linked with the midfielder, while United’s position remains that they do not want to sell him.

Fernandes is already reported to earn £220,000 a week at Old Trafford. Galatasaray’s proposed terms would include an annual salary of about £18.3 million, alongside bonuses linked to league titles, assists and Champions League progress. Those figures underline the scale of the financial gap still being addressed as United seek to retain their captain.
