Former West Brom midfielder Quevin Castro dies during Portugal friendly

Former West Bromwich Albion midfielder Quevin Castro has died aged 25 after collapsing during a friendly in Portugal. The midfielder fell during the first half of Real Sport Clube’s meeting with top-flight Estrela de Amadora at Estadio das Seixas in Lisbon on Saturday.

The Lisbon Football Association confirmed that Castro died during the pre-season fixture. No cause of death has been given. Real Sport Clube paid tribute to a player it regarded as an important part of its football community, saying his influence extended beyond his role on the pitch.

Castro grew up in Thetford, Norfolk, and began his football development at Sporting Clube’s academy before moving to England. His career included spells with Cambridge City, York City and Notts County, followed by his move to West Brom in 2021.

He made two first-team appearances for the Baggies. His debut came against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup, while his second outing was against Swansea later that season. He subsequently joined Burton Albion on loan.

Castro returned to Portugal last summer and later represented Real Sport Clube, who compete in the country’s third tier. His death came while the club was facing Estrela, a side from the top division, in a pre-season match.

West Brom said they were devastated by the news and announced plans to remember Castro during their Championship fixture against Burnley on Sunday. The club will hold a period of applause in the 25th minute, reflecting his age, while the players will wear black armbands.
