Frank Onyeka doubtful for Coventry’s 2026 Premier League opener

Coventry could be without Frank Onyeka for their Premier League return at Arsenal on 21 August, after the Super Eagles midfielder suffered a knock.

Frank Onyeka is a doubt for Coventry City’s Premier League opener at Arsenal on 21 August 2026 after suffering a knock in pre-season. The match will be Coventry’s first in England’s top flight for 25 years, with the Sky Blues travelling to the Emirates Stadium for the opening round.

The Nigeria midfielder was withdrawn late during Coventry’s 2-0 friendly win over AS Monaco last Friday. The injury has not been described as a serious long-term problem, but it has left his availability uncertain as head coach Frank Lampard prepares for the club’s return to the Premier League.

Onyeka became an important part of Coventry’s midfield after joining on loan in January. His move was made permanent this summer following a promotion campaign in which he scored against Derby County and supplied defensive strength during the run-in that ended with Coventry winning the Championship title.

The 28-year-old had featured against Northampton Town, Espanyol and Monaco during pre-season before the setback. Lampard is expected to assess the midfielder in the days before the Arsenal fixture and make a late decision on whether he can play.

Coventry’s recent results provide a positive backdrop, with wins over Watford, Wrexham and Portsmouth alongside draws against Northampton and Blackburn. Arsenal have also gone unbeaten in their last five listed matches, drawing 1-1 with Paris Saint-Germain before victories against Crystal Palace, Burnley, West Ham and Atlético Madrid. As the fixture is in round one, neither side has a league position yet.

Coventry have added another Nigerian option in attack, with Taiwo Awoniyi completing a permanent move from Nottingham Forest on Monday. He could make his debut against Arsenal, where he has scored three times in six appearances. His arrival is particularly timely because Haji Wright is sidelined with a significant quad injury.

Awoniyi spent four years at Forest, making 103 appearances and scoring 23 goals, and helped the club return to the Premier League. His partnership with Onyeka could become important for Coventry, but Lampard may first have to determine whether the midfielder has recovered in time for the trip to north London.
