Gamphani Lungu scores first PSL goal in Orlando Pirates’ 3-0 win

Gamphani Lungu scored his first PSL goal for Orlando Pirates in a 3-0 victory over Chippa United, their first league win of 2026.

Gamphani Lungu opened his South African Premier Soccer League account as Orlando Pirates defeated Chippa United 3-0. The victory gives Pirates four points from two matches in the 2026 PSL, with one win and one draw.

The match was goalless at half-time, but Lungu broke the deadlock shortly after the interval. The 27-year-old received the ball near the edge of the penalty area, created space away from his marker and struck a powerful shot beyond Chippa goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali.

Lungu’s goal arrived in the 60th minute and was his second for Orlando Pirates since joining the club. His first came in an MTN8 win over Durban City, making the Chippa match his first scoring contribution in the league.

Pirates added a second goal only three minutes later. Defender Lebone Seema rose to meet a corner and headed the ball into the net, putting the home side in a commanding position. Substitute Daniel Msendami completed the scoring in the 88th minute.

The result leaves Pirates fifth in the league table with four points and a 3-1 goal record. It also ended a difficult recent run that had included defeats by Al Suqoor, Al-Ittihad FC and Cadiz, as well as a loss to Las Palmas and a draw against Cordoba. Those matches formed part of the club’s recent form data outside its opening league record.

Lungu arrived during the off-season and has been used as a versatile option by coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. The Zambia international’s goal gives him an early league landmark at Pirates as he competes for a regular place in the team.

Orlando Pirates’ next listed league fixture is at home to Sekhukhune United on 25 August 2026. That match will give Pirates an opportunity to build on their first league victory of the season.
