Ghana defender Abdul Mumin outlines defensive strengths behind Girona move
Ghana centre-back Abdul Mumin says his defensive range and ability to pass from the back made him a fit for Girona’s style.
Ghana defender Abdul Mumin has explained the qualities he believes will help him at Girona, placing his defensive work ahead of his contribution in possession. The 28-year-old centre-back also says he is capable of supporting the Spanish club’s passing approach.
Mumin joined Girona on a free transfer before the 2026/27 season and agreed a three-year contract. The move followed four seasons in Spain with Rayo Vallecano, where he established himself after arriving from Portuguese side Vitória Guimarães.
The Ghana and Nigeria national is comfortable describing himself as a defence-first player. However, he does not see that role as incompatible with playing from the back, pointing to his ability to handle the ball and find teammates with longer passes.
His assessment of his game is built around the breadth of his defensive work. Mumin has focused on improving different parts of his defending during his career and regards that complete defensive contribution as the strongest part of his football.
At 1.88 metres, Mumin offers physical presence in the centre of defence and is recognised for his strength in defensive duels. Those attributes give Girona an experienced option as the club restructures its back line for the new campaign.
Mumin began his European career at HB Køge before moving to Nordsjaelland in the 2017/18 season. He then joined Vitória Guimarães in 2020/21 and moved to Rayo Vallecano in 2022/23 for €1.50 million. His move to Girona represents the next stage of a career that has taken him through Denmark, Portugal and Spain.
