Ghana FA recommends Carlos Queiroz for long-term Black Stars role
The Ghana Football Association has backed Carlos Queiroz to remain Black Stars coach after his work at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Ghana Football Association’s Executive Council has unanimously recommended Carlos Queiroz for a long-term position as Ghana coach after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The 73-year-old Portuguese took charge of the Black Stars on a four-month agreement before the tournament, replacing Otto Addo.
The recommendation reflects the GFA’s assessment of Queiroz’s work and its preference for continuity in the national team’s technical structure. The association believes another short-term coaching change would undermine stability as Ghana prepares for its next competitive commitments.
Queiroz’s position had been uncertain in recent weeks, with questions also raised about payments allegedly still owed to him by the government after the World Cup. GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum said he could not verify the status of those payments because he did not have access to the coach’s financial arrangements.
He confirmed, however, that the association is treating Queiroz as part of a longer-term plan for the Black Stars. The GFA has also considered the potential impact of Mohammed Kudus, Salisu Mohammed and Alexander Djiku returning to the squad after missing the World Cup. Their availability is viewed as a boost ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
The recommendation does not complete the process. A new agreement must be reviewed and approved by the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, which is expected to fund the coach’s salary. The ministry’s approval is therefore required before Queiroz’s continuation can be confirmed.
Queiroz has been informed of the Executive Council’s decision, although his response is not known. The GFA has not disclosed the terms of its proposed contract, and it is also unclear whether the coach has made a counteroffer. Negotiations between the association, the ministry and Queiroz will now determine whether the recommendation becomes a longer-term appointment.
