Ghana forward Nathan Opoku joins Northampton from Leicester City
Nathan Opoku is set to leave Leicester City for Northampton Town on a three-year deal, subject to work permit approval for the League One move.
Ghana forward Nathan Opoku is moving from Leicester City to Northampton Town on a three-year contract, with the transfer awaiting work permit approval. The League One club have agreed an undisclosed fee for the 25-year-old striker.
Opoku becomes Northampton’s 10th signing of the summer window. His arrival follows the additions of Matty Warhurst and Joe O’Brien-Whitmarsh, who have also committed to the club on long-term deals.
The 6ft attacker can play across the forward line and offers Northampton another versatile option in attack. The club will be hoping his recent scoring record continues after a productive campaign with Newport County.
Opoku scored six goals in 16 starts for Newport during the 2025/26 season, ending the campaign as the Exiles’ leading scorer. That spell came after he spent time on loan with Belgian top-flight side OH Leuven, where he scored five times.
The Ghanaian first attracted wider attention in the United States, helping Syracuse University win its first NCAA Division 1 Men’s Soccer Championship. He scored 11 goals in 25 appearances during his time with the programme before moving into European football with Leicester.
Northampton are adding Opoku as they strengthen their forward options, while the completion of the move depends on the required work permit being granted. Once approved, he will begin a new League One chapter after his strong season with Newport.
